Abstract

Cells; electrolytes; diaphragms; connections to carbons.-The porous jar of a two-fluid cell is provided with a substance which will react with chloride or sulphate of iron in the depolarizing solution or with zinc chloride in the exciting solution to form a semi-permeable diaphragm of iron hydrate or zinc carbonate. The said substance may consist of chalk which may be mixed with cement or plaster, asbestos, pumice &c. to form an adhesive layer 9<a> which is spread over the interior of the porous jar 9. Two carbon electrodes 2 may be employed, connected together by a wire 8 and also by the sealing material 16 which may consist of a mixture of resin and carbon or coke or other porous conducting material. The outer receptacle 1 and the porous jar 9 are provided with marks 1<a> and 9<c> to indicate the correct level of the solutions, said marks corresponding to the osmotic pressures of the respective solutions. A zinc electrode 15 is suspended within the jar 9 which is closed by a cover 12.
