Abstract
1153. Morrison, A. J. Feb. 8. Buoyant life-saving chambers and the like.- The life boat or buoy, shaped like a miniature submarine, rests with its lower half in a recess in the submarine and is made water-tight therein by i n t e r a c t i n g flanges or rings 2, 3 and parts 8, 9 and by a cup-leather 6. The part 9 forms the roof of a chamber 10 with a watertight door 12 and ladder 13 leading to another water-tight door 15 in the floor of the boat. The boat is released by disengaging the screw 16 from the nut 18 and by flooding the chamber 10 by opening the valves 21 in the pipes 20. The screw 16 has a flange 36 to press against the bracket 35 and so tighten the screw in the nut 17 to prevent leakage into the boat. The valves 21 are rotated by bevel-gearing from a vertical spindle, the end of which fits loosely into a socket 29, Fig. 4, in a ball 27, grooved to engage with the floor 40 of the boat and rotated by a hand-wheel 23 carried by a bracket 25.
