3016. Paff, J. J. Feb. 12. Lifeboats.-Relates to a valve for allowing water to escape. Fig. 1 shows a longitudinal section of a draining-valve for a lifeboat. The casing has a branch 4, which passes through the bottom of the boat and is secured by a nut, the joint being made tight by a packing-ring 7. This branch and the open end of the casing are protected by gratings. One end of the casing is closed and provided with a stuffing-box, through which the valve stem passes. The valve is loosely mounted on the stem, so as to be movable on it under the control of a set-screw. It is held closed by the air pressure in the casing when the boat is afloat, and can be opened by the stem. In a modification, a spider at the open end of the casing carries a pintle on which the valve slides to prevent it from sticking to the stem.
