Combustion Methods Of Internal-Combustion Engines
(AREA)
Abstract
2889. Beech, J. Feb. 5. Engines combined with internal - combustion engines. - Relates to a combined steam and internal-combustion engine wherein the end 2 of the cylinder through which the piston-rod passes acts as the steam portion, the other end acting as a two - stroke internal - combustion engine. Steam is distributed to the ends 2 of the cylinders, Fig. 1. by flat slide valves which also control the exhaust from the upper ends of the cylinders, and which are set, or their upper steam edges 4 lengthened, to close the upper end of the cylinders to steam. When admission begins, a steam air injector 5 injects steam and air into the upper end of the cylinders through ports 6 controlled by the pistons. During the up-strokes, this mixture is compressed, and liquid fuel injected through atomizers placed in the upper cylinder covers. The engine starts as a steam-engine, the fuel injection being started and controlled by .the steam chest pressure. The piston is concave or inwardly dished to form a combustion chamber.
