Abstract

Projectiles; Projectile fuses. -Relates to shrapnel shells intended for use against balloons, and provided with a smoke-producing charge and a time - fuse, the arrangement being such that the shrapnel is exploded a given interval of time after the ignition of the smokeproducing charge. According to this invention, the interval of time is independent of the smoke-producing charge, which may therefore be designed solely with regard to its smokeproducing effect, and is obtained by a short length m<3> of time - fuse composition which is ignited at m<5> by a main time-fuse simultaneously with the ignition of the smoke - producing charge E, as shown in Fig. 6, and, after the given interval of time, ignites the shrapnel through channels m<6>, m<7> leading to the usual fuse charge P and tube D. The main time-fuse comprises a fixed ring Hand two adjustable rings J, K coupled together by a bridge N. Passages h<2>, k<2> are formed in the rings H, K, so that, in one position shown in Fig. 4, the flash passes directly from the passages m<1>, i<1> to the passage m<7>, and the shrapnel is exploded immediately after the discharge of the shell, and produces a case-shot effect.
