Abstract

5654. King's Norton Metal Co., Bayliss, T. A., and Whitworth, E. March 9. Projectile fuses.-Relates to fuses which have a magazine m at or near the inner end of the fuse, and in which a pellet surrounding the detonatorcarrier of the percussion fuse sets back on discharge and moves forward with the detonator-carrier on impact, and also in which the forward creeping of the pellet during flight is prevented by a spring. According to the present invention, the detonator c, or each detonator c, d in the case of combined time and percussion fuses, is arranged in a spring- controlled tubular detonator-carrier e or f, which normally closes the flash passage w or w<1> and opens out to a vent x or s, so that in the case of premature ignition a light seal y or s<2> is blown out somewhat in the manner of the light seals described in Specifications 3966/06 and 14,950/07 ; when the detonator-carrier moves towards the firing-pin, the vent passage is closed and the flash passage is opened. In percussion fuses, the pellet has a spring sleeve n and a spring ring 1, which normally lock the detonator-carrier d. and, after the setting- back of the pellet on discharge, lock the pellet to the detonator-carrier, suitable steps 2 being provided for the purpose. During flight, forward creeping is prevented by a spring ring 3 which yields on impact. The time and percussion fuses may be locked for transport by removable pins z,r.
