Abstract
8708. Hale, F. M. June 12. Projectile fuses.- Relates to time-fuses for illuminating or other projectiles adapted to be fired from a gun by means of a stem fitting into the barrel, such as those described in Specifications 15045 / OS and 10494/09. According to this invention, the time-fuse is placed between the igniting- charge or the detonator of the projectile and the stem, which is made hollow, and is ignited by the flash from the propellent cartridge passing up the stem, or by a percussion device located in the front end of the stem and actuated by the pressure of the propellent gases. In the form shown in Fig. 1, which shows the invention applied to an illuminating- projectile, the flash from the cartridge passes up the hollow stem 4 and through a very small hole 7 and ignites a length of quick-burning powder 6, which is contained in a passage closed by a readily blown out plug 8. The charge 6 in turn ignites the time-fuse composition 5. Holes 7<a> in the stem allow air to escape at the time of firing. In the modification in which a percussion device is used in place of the hole 7 a percussion cap communicating by two narrow holes with the charge 6 is provided. A plunger is normally held in the slightly enlarged upper end of the bore of the stem 4 by a copper shearing-pin, and on discharge is driven forward by the pressure of the gases in the stem so as to fire the cap.
