In operation, with the parts positioned as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing, when the projectile is firedand strikes an objeet, inertia ,causes the continued movement of the firing'plunger 8 relative to the projectile, causing the spring ring 18 to expand and permit the outward movement of the plunger, so that the hammer 7 strikes the primer 11 andthe flame from the primer then passes througha central aperture 12 in the hammer 7 tea central aperture in the cartridge 9, igniting the cartridge to produce gas.
To facilitate the quick combustion of the cartridge, openings 13 may also be provided in the member 6,'and the rear end of the primer holder is slotted, so that the flame from the ignited primer 11 can readily pass through the holes 13 to the cartridge.
The flame from the primer also passes through the opening in the cartridge 9 to the usual tube 14.- leadi to the projectile explosive charge 15 and since the flame must pass the cartridge and ignite same before the flame reaches the ex losive charge, it

In order to provide for the prevention of accidental, explosion of the projectile in. handling, etc., the primer holder 10 may be made reversible, so that when transported, the rimer holder is placed as shown in Fig. 2 o the drawing, with a knob 16' adapted to take the blow of the firing hammer 7 in case of accidental forward movement of same.
In order to indicate that the projectile is in an inoperative position, a projecting washer 17 may be interposed between the cap 5 and the nose portion 4 when the parts are screwed together.
When it is desired to put the projectile in operating condition, the, cap 5'1s unscrewed, the primer holder is turned around, so that the primer side is presented to the firing plunger as shown in Fig. .1, the.
