Abstract

100,255. Soc. Anon. Meccanica Lombarda. April 6, 1915, [Convention date]. Projectiles. - Relates to shells made with a number of bullets in their walls, these bullets being expelled during flight by an explosive charge which is ignited by a time-fuse, the shell being subsequently burst on impact by a high - explosive charge situated within the bullet expelling charge. According to the invention, the two explosive charges S, E, Fig. 2, are contained within concentric casings C, I, which can be attached to the projectile and detached therefrom as a single unit. The charge in the casing I is subdivided by flanges a on the casing C. The wall of the shell is made with recesses arranged in spiral formation around the shell for the reception of bullets p, which may be jacketed and are expanded into annular grooves r to lock them in place; or the bullets have bands expanded into said grooves. The bullets are provided with raised parts fitting into riflings in their recesses, or the bullets are shaped like spiral polyhedra and the recesses correspondingly shaped. The bullets project slightly inside the shell to hold the casing I slightly away from the wall of the shell. The charge E is ignited by a time-fuse T, and the high-explosive charge S is fired by a percussion fuse P. The annular elements of the charge E may be separately enclosed in floss-silk gauze. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes also a modification in which there is no. casing C and no charge E, separate cartridges b, Fig. 8, (cancelled), being used for each bullet, ignition being conveyed from the time-fuse to holes b<1> in these cartridges by an explosive train around the cartridges between the wall of the shell B and the central casing C. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted. Projectile fuses.-The percussion pellet m is locked bv spring bolts q, which are moved out of the locking position by the set-back of a ring 0 when the projectile is discharged. The time-fuse T is provided with an annulus g of explosive composition, which communicates with the charge E of the shell through several perforations normally covered by a thin inflammable diaphragm.
