Abstract

18,049. Schneider, E. July 30. Projectile fuses.-Relates to time and percussion fuses for combined shrapnel and common shell, and consists in preventing the premature action of the percussion fuse, under the shock due to the explosion of the shrapnel part, by means which lock or disarm the percussion fuse until impact or permanently, in the latter case, a by-pass filled with time composition being provided between the time fuse and the common shell part to ensure the explosion of this part of the shell a given time after the explosion of the shrapnel part. In the form shown in Fig. 1, a bolt P is moved outwards when a composition J is ignited by the time fuse, and the spring ring 0, thus released, holds the percussion pellet E back until impact. In modifications of this arrangement, the pin P is removed by hand, or by centrifugal force, or is sheared automatically. In a modified arrangement, the bolt P has a leaden nose which is forced into a notch in the pellet E and holds the pellet back until impact, whereupon the nose of the bolt is sheared. In another arrangement similar to the last mentioned, the bolt is not sheared, but a by-pass filled with time composition is provided between the time fuse and the common shell part. In another arrangement, the bolt is only temporarily pressed in the notch of the pellet and is withdrawn therefrom by a spring when the pressure of the gases from the composition J has subsided. In still another arrangement, a spring bolt, released by the withdrawal of a locking-pin by hand, presses radially against the pellet, holding it at safe until impact, when the grip is insufficient to prevent the advance of the pellet. In the form shown in Fig. 5, a spring bolt I is set into a notch e<3> in a ring E<1> or withdrawn from said notch according to the position of the fuse ring G; when the bolt is set in as shown, the time fuse is connected to the shrapnel, the ring E<1> is locked, and the pellet E is held back by a spring E<2> until impact; and, when the ring G is rotated to the position where it releases the bolt I, the time fuse is cut off, the ring E' sets back on discharge and becomes locked to the pellet E. by the opening out of a split ring E<3>, and, on impact, the combined pellet and ring shoots forward. In the form shown in Fig. 17, a flash passage obturator R r, controlled by a spring, is set by the rotation of a fuse ring G, as the bolt I in Fig. 5, and a by-pass N, filled with time composition and connecting the time fuse to the common shell part, serves to explode the common shell part when the flash passage e' of the percussion fuse is closed by the obturator R r. A distance-piece S holds the percussion pellet E at safe during transport and until released by the combustion of a compressed powder block s in known manner. In a modification, of the form shown in Fig. 17, the fuse ring G sets a bolt similar to the bolt I of Fig. 5, which bolt, when pressed in, projects in front of the percussion pellet and prevents its advance. In another modification) a flash obturator like R r, Fig. 17, is moved into the obturating position by a bolt similar to P, Fig. 1, when this is moved in by the combustion of a small charge ignited by the time fuse. In the form shown in Fig. 19, the firing-pin F is temporarily moved out of alinement with the percussion cap by a bolt T when this is forced in by the combustion of a small powder charge ignited by the time fuse, and the pin is returned to the firing position by a spring F<1> when the combustion has subsided. In the form shown in Fig. 20, the firing-pin F is drawn away permanently from the percussion pellet by a spring V when a powder charge Y<1> is ignited by the igniter C of the time fuse, the common shell part being then exploded by a by-pass N from the time fuse. A forked pin D' of known construction is used to lock the igniter of the time fuse, and is withdrawn for shrapnel action.
