FUSE FOR PROJECTILES.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Join; HERBERT MAN- SELL, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Ordnance Works, Coventry, England, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fuses for Projectiles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in fuses for high explosive shells, its object being to provide a fuse which shall produce a powerful detonation so as to detonate with certainty the charge of the shell and shall alsobe safe to handle.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a longitudinal section partly in elevation of a fuse embodying my improvements.
Fig. 2 is a similar view of a modification.
Referring to Fig. 1, a, is the body of the fuse into which screws a steel gaine b, and a diaphragm c is screwed into the gaine b. In front of the diaphragm c is a charge d of high explosive, such as 'trinitrophcnylmethylnitramin or tetryl, in the middle of which is powder e insulated from the charge (Z by a paper. cylinder f at the ends of which are insulating paper cups 9 and h. Behind the diaphragm c is a larger charge of high explosive, such as tetryl, andbetween the charge cl and the diaphragm 0 is a'powder pellet j. I
The fuse shown in Fig. 2 is similar to that shown in Fig. 1 except that the powder pellet 9 is smaller and another powder pellet 7c is placed in front of the charge cl.
Vvhen the flash from either the time or percussion arrangement reaches the powder pellets k, the latter is ignited and the powder e and the high explosive (Z are in turn ignited which in turn ignite the powder pellets j which are interposed between the inner ends of the charges d and e and the diaphragm c. The ignition of the charges above referred to causes the diaphragm 0 to be broken or perforated and the high explosive in rear of the diaphragm is then ignited. By thus arranging the powder pellets in connection with the other charges mentioned, the detonation of the major charge is made more complete and certain than in arrangements hereinbefore employed.
What I claim is 1. In a shell fuse, the combination of a gaine, a solid transverse diaphragm therein, a charge of high explosive in front of the diaphragm, another charge of high explosive in rear of the diaphragm, and a powder pellet between the two charges.

3. In a shell fuse, the combination of a gaine, a solid transverse diaphragm therein, a charge of high explosive in front of the diaphragm, another charge of high explosive in rear of the diaphragm and a powder pellet at each-end of the first charge of high explosive.
4:. In a shell fuse, the combination of a gaine, a solid transverse diaphragm therein, a charge of high explosive in front of the diaphragm, anothercharge of high explosive in rear of the diaphragm, a powder pellet at each end of the first charge of high explosive, and powder in the interior of and insulated from the first charge of high explosive.
5. In a shell fuse, the combination of a gaine, a solid transverse diaphragm therein, a charge of high explosive in front of the diaphragm, another charge of high explosive in rear of the diaphragm, and a powder pellet interposed between the ends of the two charges.
6. In a shell fuse, the combination of a gaine, a solid transverse diaphragm therein, acharge of high explosive in front of the diaphragm, another charge of high explosive in rear of the diaphragm, and a powder pellet interposed between the diaphragm and the inner end of the high explosive charge in front of said diaphragm.
