Abstract

17,494. Aitken, R. Aug. 1. Tubes, water. -To increase the heating- surface and to facilitate the cleaning of the tubes in a Yarrow or other water-tube boiler, the tubes are made of diamond, hexagonal, rhomboidal, oval, or other shape except circular, in cross-section, and are arranged so as to leave straight passages through the groups of tubes. The ends of the tubes are rounded for expansion into the tube-plates. Fig. 1 shows a crosssection of a group of tubes having their centre parts of rectangular shape. The tubes may be formed by pressing their centre parts into the desired shape and leaving their ends round, or the centre parts may be shaped separately, their ends being worked to a circular form and welded to circular end-pieces.
