The helical springs are formed of short pieces of metal, the ends of one piece being overlapped by the next piece, and the convolutions being placed at any desirable distance apart. The outer parts of the springs are connected to a ring f, and metallic plates i, kept in position by a ring j, protect the leather strips from chafing. The leather strips g are placed diagonally on the springs.
