Metallic spring bodies and cores; tread bands, projections, and surfaces ; tyre attachments to rims.-A cover for elastic or pneumatic tyres is made in one or more pieces of inextensible material, and is secured detachably to rings at the sides of the rim in such a manner as to take all driving and lateral strains from the cushion. The tyre is mounted with some circumferential, or circumferential and transverse freedom. In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, cover-sections B shaped to a base wider than any part of the tyre are connected by screwed bolts B<1> to rings A fixed on extensions of forked spokes D'. The rim D is supported by shoulders on the spokes and carries a ring C' movable circumferentially and laterally, on which are seated coiled springs C<2> . The ends of the springs carry blocks E, in which are pivoted shoes C<3> surrounded by a winding of wire or chain, or connected by links. Seated in the shoes is a tyre or flexible band C on which the cover rests. The springs are compressed before the application of the winding, or the connexion of the shoes, by inserting rods fitted with nuts through apertures in the ring C<1> and screwing them into the blocks. In the form shown in Fig. 4, conical volute springs are used, and the rim consists of a wide band seated on a felloe. One side of the rim is integral with spaced rings A<1>, A<2> connected thereto by radial ribs D'‹. A similar frame is attached to the other side. The cover bears on the outer rings, and is secured to the inner rings. The blocks E are formed with transverse ribs seated in grooves in the shoes. The ring C<1> may in both cases be dispensed with.
