Abstract
16.741. Lloyd, G. E. July 28. Governing compound engines. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 33, the throttle valve 40 has on its stem a piston, the upper side of which is subject to boiler pressure, while the lower side is subject to receiver pressure. When the valve 40 is lowered to throttle the steam, the pressure in the receiver is reduced, and the valve is thus further lowered by the pressure on the upper face of the piston, until steam is admitted through the pipe 48 to the cylinder 49. The piston in this cylinder controls a throttle valve in the low-pressure cylinder steam pipe. In a modification, the piston is not on the valve stem, but is connected to the valve by a lever, and serves as a distributing-valve for the cylinder 49, the piston of which may control gear such as described in Specification No. 12,620, A.D. 1901.
