Abstract

24,843. Neal, H. A., and Smith, A. Pye-. Nov. 5. Compound engines.-An arrangement of lift valves for varying the stages of expansion is shown in the Figure. The chamber C is connected to the high -pressure exhaust, and the chamber D to the low-pressure valve-chest. The chamber J is connected to the low -pressure exhaust and the condenser. In the position shown, the engine is running compound. On admitting steam by the pipe B<2> to the piston K, the chamber C is put into communication with the condenser, and main steam enters through orifice O<1> past the valve M to the chamber D. An automatic operation may be obtained by taking steam from the engine side of the stop valve, and making the piston of such an area that the throttled steam used in ordinary running will not operate it.
