Abstract

12,450. Defays, V. June 15. Compound engines ; starting and stopping.-The intercepting- valve of a compound winding- engine is reversed by a governor which is operated by the engine at a predetermined speed. The high-pressure cylinder is supplied with steam through pipes 2, 3, Fig. 4. Between these is interposed a reducing-valve 4 actuated by a handle 5. The low-pres-. sure cylinder is supplied with steam, when the stop valve 11. is open, through passages 2, 9, 12, 13, 14, stop valves 4, 11, and the differential pressure-reducing valve 10. When the engine is working compound, the valve 11 is closed by a rod 36, Fig. 1, attached to the intercepting- valve rod 24. The high-pressure exhaust passes by passages 16, 17, 13 to the low-pressure cylinder. The intercepting- valve 20 is actuated by a piston 25 working in a cylinder 29, which is connected to the boiler by a pipe 27. The ends of the cylinder are connected by a pipe and one end is fitted with an exhaust pipe and valve controlled by the governor. On the valve being closed, the valve 20 is moved forward and the stop valve 11 opened, the exhaust from the high-pressure cylinder passing by a pipe to the atmosphere or condenser, and the engine then works as a twin engine.
