Abstract

11,705. Hodgkinson, F. May 24, A.D. 1902, [date applied for under Patents Act, A.D. 1901]. Steam turbines.-Relates to means for controlling the supply of steam to a turbine, or other engine. Figs. 1 and 2 show the invention as applied to a turbine of the Parson's type, in which extra power is got by supplying live steam to some intermediate point by a pipe 4 provided with a throttlevalve 5 controlled by a governor. The governor controlling the engine may be used, or a special governor may be employed to actuate the valve. The double-heat valve 8 is normally closed by a spring in a chamber 12 to which steam is supplied by a small passage 14, and in which slides a piston on the valve-stem. When the speed falls below the normal after the ordinary throttle-valve is fully open, the valve 24 is depressed to allow the steam to escape from the cylinder 12, whereupon the pressure in the chamber 7 raises the piston and opens the valve 8. When the valve 24 is closed, the pressure on the two sides of the piston is equalized, and the valve is closed by the spring. In a modification, the valve is opened by the spring and closed by fluid pressure.
