Abstract

5291. Royce, F. H. March 4. P i s t o n valves for regulating the supply of lubricating - oil to an internal - combustion engine are operated by the difference in pressure in the induction pipe due to action of the throttle - valve. The induction pipe. is connected by a pipe h to a cylinder a containing a piston b, which carries the valve c. A recess c' in the valve controls the flow of oil under pressure from an inlet pipe e to an outlet pipe f leading to the cylinders of the engine. The space below the piston b has an opening m to the atmosphere, and a pipe n by which oil drains to the crank-chamber. The lower part of the casing d contains oil and acts as a dash-pot to retard the motion of the valve; passages c<2> in the valve are closed when the valve descends, by an automatic valve c<3>.
