Abstract

25,195. Perry, P. J. Nov. 19. Fluid relays.-In an arrangement for governing steam engines or turbines, a centrifugal governor acts by admitting steam to a relay cylinder, the piston of which actuates a throttle valve or reversing-link. The governor, Fig. 1, on rising opens an adjustable valve 11, and admits steam below a piston valve 25, Fig. 3, thereby shifting this valve and the valves 23, 24 into the positions shown in Fig. 4. The upper side of the piston 28 is then open to exhaust through the port 19, while steam enters below it through the ports 37, 18. The piston 28 thus rises and operates the regulator. When the governor falls, steam is cut off from below the valve 25, which is returned by a spring 26. To regulate the action, the pipe 36 is provided to admit steam to a valve-chest 21 at a pressure which can be regulated by hand. The relay piston-rod, in one modification, carries the throttle valve, which is in the form of a sluice valve. In another modification, the piston-rod w orks a crank 30, Fig. 5, which can, by a suitable clutch, be put in gear with the weigh shaft 29, the same action disconnecting the weigh shaft from the crank 33 driven by the reveraing-engine.
