Plant. - In turbines and steam - engines in which steam is tapped at an intermediate stage for heating and other purposes, the inlet valve to the low-pressure stage and the sleeve-load of the speed governor controlling the inlet valve to the high-pressure stage are simultaneously adjusted in accordance with the pressure at the tapped point by regulating-mechanism of the kind described in Specification 23,464/12. In a turbine comprising high and low pressure stages b, e, and having an intermediate chamber d tapped by a pipe c, a speed governor i is arranged to operate in the same sense the high and low pressure inlet valves g, f in accordance with the load on the turbine, and the pressure in the chamber d is utilized in conjunction with the extensible rod k of the valve f to operate the valves g, f in opposite senses. The rod k is fitted with a piston m working in a cylinder l and subjected above to the pressure of the fluid in the chamber d and below to the pressure of a spring n. An increase of pressure in the chamber d causes the valve f to open further, and the accompanying downward movement of the rod k tends through the spring o and lever p to close the valve g and vary the sleeve-load of the governor i. In a modification, the shifting of the valves f, g is effected indirectly by the speed and pressure governors through the medium of servomotors.
