Abstract

14,642. Davies, T., and Zeale, R. T. June 22. Valves closing with rush of fluid. -A stop valve, automatically closed on diminution of pressure due to accidental escape of steam but normally operated by a screw g<1>, has a divided spindle g, the two parts of which are held together by flanges s engaging a fork r slidably mounted on a cross-head q. This cross-head is carried by a rod p having a differential piston l, m moving in a cylinder i, one end of which is supplied with steam at boiler pressure through a pipe o, while the other end is connected to the pipe system through a pipe n. When a large diminution of pressure occurs in the pipe system, the fork r is withdrawn, and the valve is closed by the boiler pressure acting on a differential piston e, f connected to the valve spindle.
