Abstract

16.318. Surtees, A., and Thew, C. Aug. 10. Self-closing valves.-Relates to automatic shutoff valves for preventing an outrush of steam on the fracture of a pipe between the engine and the stop valve. A cylinder B is formed in the stopvalve cover, in which works a piston C attached to the valve spindle. The space below the piston communicates with the steam pipe E by a tube D, while the space above is opened to or cut off from the boiler steam by an emergency valve B<4>. This valve is normally kept closed by a spring acting on a piston C', in conjunction with steam entering from the steam pipe through the tube D'. On the occurrence of a fracture, the reduction of pressure in the tubes D' and D permits the emergency valve to open, and the stop valve A' to be closed by steam acting on the piston C.
