Abstract

120,682. British Thomson - Houston Co., (General Electric Co.). Feb. 13, 1918. Dash - pots. - A dash-pot, particularly intended for reducing axial vibrations in a turbine or like shaft, comprises a cylinder 14 fitted with a piston 13 to which is connected the end of the shaft 5, valves 18 spring- mounted in the end wall 17 and opening inwardly into the cylinder 14, a casing 22 having a corrugated or fluted wall 23 which forms a flexible diaphragm, and a conduit 24 by which oil or like fluid is supplied under pressure to the casing 22 and cylinder 14. Normally, the wall 23 of the casing is distended so that, when any movement of the piston away from the end wall 17 occurs and the valves 18 open, the wall 23 assists the flow of fluid through the valves but resists the return movement of the piston. The latter movement is effected with the valves 18 closed and the fluid forcing its way past the piston rings 13a to the drain-pipe 26. In a modification, Fig. 2, both end walls 15, 17 of the cylinder are provided with valves, the additional valves 27 leading into an annular chamber 28 connected by a pipe 30 to the casing 22.
