Abstract

28,769. Bramwell, J. Dec. 31. Starting and stopping; reversing.-The stop valve of a marme engine may only be opened by the engineer when the engine telegraph is at 'ahead' or 'astern,' and the engine may only be started in the direction indicated by the telegraph. The stop valve A is operated by a plunger G moving in a cylinder H, to which steam is admitted through ports T, T<1> by a valve 0, operated by a link R connected to the telegraph. When the telegraph is moved to 'ahead ' or 'astern,' the port T or T' is opened, and steam, admitted to the chest of the valve 0 by a pipe M, flows to the exhaust pipe N through a port in a valve P, also operated by the telegraph. If a valve Q is then operated by the engineer in the correct direction, the port in thevalve P is closed, and the plunger G is raised. In an emergency, the engine may be started in the direction against the telegraph by holding closed a valve U in the exhaust pipe N. The stop valve may be closed but not opened by an emergency hand-wheel K and lever J, acting on a collar or abutment on the valve spindle.
