Abstract

12,822. Richardson, R. June 8. Steering-gear.-Relates to steam steering-gear of the kind described in Specification No. 17,512, A.D. 1888 ; blowing through during inaction is prevented, and, by employing separate exhaust valves, a small controlling-valve can be employed. The controlling-valve B is worked through the usual hunting gear, and in its central position both ports c are open to steam, which passes the pistons E, through the ports f, Fig. 1, and presses the exhaust valves to their seats. When the valve B is shifted, the port c on one side is opened to the exhaust passage c', whereby the pressure beneath the piston E on the other side tends to lift its valve G and to open the corresponding port d leading from the valve-chest to the main exhaust passage i. The non-return valves H between the ports c, d may be separate from the valves G, or may be dispensed with, as shown in Fig. 4, where a small port k relieves the pressure above the piston E when the ports c, d are closed to steam pressure. The exhaust valves may be opened mechanically by tappets connected to the gear of the valve B.
