Abstract

16,061. Davey, H. July 18. Working-valves.-Fig. 2 shows an arrangement of valves for a double-acting engine, in which the valves can be actuated mechanically or by water pressure. Thevalve- casing communi- cates with the cy- linder through passages B, B<1>, and with the supply and exhaust through passages A, C, res- pectively. The hollow inlet valves E, E' have ports L, L<1> communicating with the passage A, and take a seating against the ends of the exhaust valves F, F<1>. These ex- haust valves have seatings H, H<1>, and are controlled by springs K, K<1>, passages I, I<1> ad- mitting pressure water to the spaces at the back of the valves. The inlet valves are connected by rods M, M' coupled to a rocking lever N. When operated mechani- cally, the lever N is rocked by means of a crank D, and passages P, P<1> are formed in the ends of the valves E, E' to equalize the pressure on both sides of the valves. When the crank D is moved in one direction, the inlet valve E opens to admit pressure water to the cylinder through the port B, and the valve F<1> is opened to exhaust water from the other end of the cylinder, the valves F, E<1> remaining closed. When the crank is moved in the opposite direction, the valves F, E<1> are opened, and the valves E, F<1> closed. When operated by water pressure, the crank D and the passages P, P' are dispensed with, and openings Q, Q<1> are provided in the cover R to admit water, the supply being controlled by valves. If water be admitted through the opening Q<1> to the back of the valve E', this valve is in equilibrium, but the valve E is moved to open the passage B to pressure. The movement-of the valve E is trans- mitted through the rods M, M' to the valve E<1>, which moves the valve F<1> so as to open the passage B' to exhaust. When water is admitted through the opening Q, the valves E<1>, F are opened, and the valves E, F<1> closed. In another arrange- ment, the valves E, F and E', F<1> are arranged in tandem fashion, with separate inlet and exhaust openings for the respective valves. The inlet valves are operated by a rocking lever, and in the case of duplex engines, one engine mechanism operates the valves of the other. An arrangement is also described for cushioning the plungers or pistons of duplex and all double-acting engines near the ends of the stroke. The exhaust ports or pipes lead into a pipe in which are arranged two connected pistons, operated through a pivoted lever by the plunger or piston. These pistons are arranged so that they come over the openings of the exhaust pipes and throttle the exhaust near the end of the stroke, thus cushioning the plunger or piston.
