Abstract

22,786. Weir, W. Oct. 15. Pumping-engines; valves and valvegear.-In engines such as are described in Specification No. 10,586, A.D. 1901, wherein separate inlet and exhaust piston valves are placed on a common spindle, and are operated during the first part of their movement by mechanical means and during the latter part of the movement by fluid pressure, pistons w, x are provided which temporarily close the cylinder to exhaust and ensure the rapid movement of the valves. The inlet and exhaust valves n, p, r, t, Fig. 2, are placed upon a common rod v, which is operated from the piston-rod, and are provided with collars o, q, s, u which register with the liner b. The valve casing is provided with a steam chamber, recesses communicating with the ends of the cylinder, and chambers connected to the exhaust. When the valves have been moved beyond their central position by the piston-rod, the pistons w, x cover the ports i, j, the chambers w<1>, x<1> are opened to exhaust and steam respectively, and the fluid pressure acting upon the differential areas of the valves completes the movement, thereby opening the ports j, i, respectively, to steam and exhaust. In the modification, shown in Fig. 5, the valves are arranged in pairs coupled together by a beam 1. The shoulders o, q, s, u may be placed upon the seatings instead of upon the valves.
