Steering - gear.-Relates to steering and like engines, the objects being to prevent loss of steam at the controlling-valve and to reduce the power requisite for operating it. These objects are accomplished by the use of poppet or lift valves which close absolutely when the angine is at rest, and are actuated by pistons under the control of a very small slide valve connected to the usual hunting motion, or worked by hand. Boiler steam is admitted at A, and is supplied to one end or other of the engine valve-chest through passages D, D', by the poppet valves B, B', and is exhausted from the other end by valves C, C<1>, mounted on the same spindles as the valves B, B', and controlling the passage to the final exhaust outlet E. The valves B, B' are operated by pistons F, F<1> actuated by steam distributed by the small slide valve L working in a chest supplied with steam through the passage I. In its middle position, this valve allows steam to act on both pistons so as to keep both the valves B, B<1> closed.
