Regulating.-In Diesel engines, particularly motor-car or marine engines, in which the quantity of fuel injected is regulated by hand, the moment of opening, and if desired also the amount and duration of opening, of the fuel-injection valve is varied automatically according to the speed by means of a speed regulator or the variable pressure occurring in the suction pipe or the cooling-water pipe. In the form shown, the stroke of the fuel pump 19, actuated by a cam 21 and lever 22, is varied bv means of a handwheel 24 and screw 25. The cam 29 actuating the fuel-injection valve 5 is formed tapering, as shown in Fig. 2, and is moved axially by the governor 30 so as to cause the valve to be opened earlier at high speeds than at low speeds. The lift of the valve is also increased, and by making the effective length of cam-surface increase also, the duration of opening will also become greater as the speed increases.
