Abstract
185,821. Fairey Aviation Co., Ltd., and Fairey, C. R. June 8, 1921. Vessels for carrying aircraft.-An aircraftcarrying vessel is constructed with a flat counter and an overhanging slipway at the stern, thus enabling aircraft to approach the mother vessel in the comparatively smooth water in the wake of the ship and to be run up the slipway and be brought aboard by any suitable means. In one form, the slipway 23 is run down the inclined guide-way 37 under the control of cables 42 attached to the slip-way and passing over pulleys 43, 44, the latter being driven by a reversible winch 45. The slip-way is provided with a buoyancy tank 50 connected by air pipes 53, 54 with a blower 55, non-return air valves 51, 52 controlling the air pressure within the tank. In modifications, the tank is replaced by adjustable hydrovanes or inclined slots are cut the body of the slip-way, and the flow of water therethrough being controlled by angularly adjustable cover plates. The forward launching deck is provided with a catapult apparatus.
