Abstract

184,684. Burrull, S. C. July 29, 1921. Portable turning-apparatus.-In a device for machining the seats of boiler tube flanges a member 1 secured by a bolt 6 and plate 8 in one of the holes of the end plate' 7 is provided with guides in which an extension 4 of the tool-support 2 may be secured. A spindle 11 retained in position by nuts 12 in the member 2 carries integrally a wheel 13 gearing with a pinion 14 on a shaft 15 operated from a wheel 16. The tool 26 is clamped in a carrier 20 disposed in an enlarged end 19 of the spindle 11. The shaft 15 carries a pinion 36 engaging a wheel 35 in threaded engagement with a rod 32 passing through the spindle 11 and carrying a taper key 33, coacting with a groove 31 in the tool-carrier which is pressed against the key by a spring 24. In operation the spindle 11 is rotated to give a circular movement to the tool while the wheel 35, being driven at a speed different from that of the rod 32, causes the latter to be drawn axially through the tool-carrier to move the tool over the face of the flange as shown in Fig. 3.
