Abstract

205,608. Buttrum, W. Aug. 4, 1922. Lathes; attachments for turning.-A screwcutting lathe is provided with an attachment comprising an extension member secured to the existing tool carriage and provided with a split nut coacting with an auxiliary lead screw which is quickly detachable for cutting threads of different pitches. The carriage 13 normally traversed either by the lead screw 22 or by the feed shaft 23 is provided with an extension 30 secured by bolts 34 and accommodating a split nut operated through a cam plate from a handle 54 to engage the auxiliary hollow lead screw 45 which is splined to the screw 22. The outer end of the auxiliary screw is mounted in a bearing bracket 37 adjustably secured to the lathe bed and provided with a stop pin 60 to limit the carriage movement, When it is required to change the auxiliary screw for one of a different pitch the outer bearings of the lead screw and feed shaft are removed and the auxiliary screw together with its bearing bracket may then be slid off. In a modification, Fig. 6, the auxiliary screw may be provided with two differently threaded portions 61, 62 the carriage extension being fitted with two corresponding split nuts.
