571,886. Screw - and - nut gearing. CAMMELL LAIRD & CO., Ltd., PETRIE, J. T., and WILLIS, R. W. Oct. 19, 1943, No. 17163. [Class 80 (iii)] [Also in Group XXII] Mechanism for actuating the saddle 10 of a machine tool comprises a normal lead screw 11 co-operating with a nut 12 adapted to be operatively coupled to the saddle and an auxiliary lead screw 13 in the form of a sleeve mounted on the normal lead screw and engaging a lead screw nut 15 permanently coupled to the saddle. The nut 12 and also another nut 23 on the lead screw 11 are split and in the arrangement shown in Fig. 1 are clamped to the lead screw at each end of the auxiliary lead screw 13 so as to retain in position keys 22, by which the two lead screws are held in non- rotating relation. Rotation of the screw 11 then actuates the saddle through the screw 13 and nut 15. By releasing the nuts 12, 23, removing keys 22 and coupling the nut 12 to the saddle by a detachable bracket, rotation of the screw 11 effects direct actuation of the saddle through the nut 12.
