Abstract
549,168. Lathes. FACKS, W. Sept. 12, 1941, No. 11696. [Class 83 (iii)] The mandrel 1, Fig. 2, of a screw-cutting lathe is moved axially, to feed the work, by a threaded member 5 fixed to the mandrel and constantly in mesh with a worm-wheel 6, which can be locked against rotation by a hand-applied brake. At the end of the axial movement, the brake is taken off, and the mandrel is slid back to initial position by means such as a spring 37 and a lever 31. The brake may consist of a plunger 18, Fig. 4, carrying a pad 16, which is pressed against the face of the worm-wheel by a spring 19. The plunger can be retracted by means of a handle 17 having a cam-surface 21, which co-operates with a cam-surface on the frame 4. The mandrel is driven from a shaft 23 by worm-gearing 24, 25 and spur-gears 28, 29. The device may be applied to the traversing means of the lathe saddle.
