Abstract
711,759. Rolling screw-threads. HERBERT, Ltd., A. Oct. 28, 1952, No. 27028/52. Class 83 (4) In a die head for rolling screw threads, holders 14, Fig. 1, pivoted on axes parallel to the longitudinal axis of the head and carrying annnularly ridged rolls 11 mounted at a helical angle are held by cam faces 28 on a scroll sleeve 24 to maintain the rolls 11 in engagement with the work 17 and the sleeve is biased to rotate and free the rolls automatically when a required length of thread has been rolled. The body 19 of the die head carried by the saddle of a lathe and fed axially towards rotating work 17 in the lathe chuck carries the holders 14 on pins 18 and has the scroll sleeve 24 rotatably mounted on its outer periphery with the projecting cam edge 28 iri engagement with rolls 29 on. the holders 14. A cover plate 21 attached by. bolts 22 to the ends of the pins 18 retains the holders 14 and sleeve 24 in position and permits interchange of holders having different forming rolls. Springs 31 in slots 50 in the body 19 engaging the holders 14 through pins 32 normally urge the holders so that the rolls 11 are held clear of the work. The body 19, Fig. 2, is slidably mounted on a shank 34 attached to the lathe saddle and held against rotation by keys 36. The scroll sleeve 24 is rotatable about the body 19 by a handle 46 to set the rolls 11 to the required working diameter but is normally urged by a spring 47 to a position at which the rolls 11 are freed from engagement with the work. The sleeve 24 is locked in the required position for a given diameter of work by dogs 44 engaging recesses on a rotatably adjustable ring 40 attached to a flange 39 on the shank 34 and held by bolts 41 passing through slots 42 in the ring. Springs 51 under the head of bolts 38 normally retain the dogs 44 in engagement but in operation after the required length of thread has been rolled and the lathe saddle is stopped, continued rotation of the work draws the rolls 11 and body 19 along the shank 34 against the action of the springs 51 until the dogs 44 are disengaged and the rolls released from engagement.
