550,029. Screwing die-heads. FAIRWEATHER, H. G. C. (National Acme Co.). Aug. 6, 1941, No. 9999. [Class 83 (iii)] In a self-opening, taper-threading, die-head the chaser carriers 5 slide in T-slots in the head 3 of the body 2 under the control of pins 22 engaging cams in a ring 19, constantly urged in the opening direction by a spring 20. A notch 18 in the ring 19 engages a key 17 in a ring 14 splined on a rotatable sleeve 13. A cross bar 9 in a core 7 has flattened ends 11 that engage inclined slots 12 in the sleeve 13. Adjustably mounted in the core is a stop 8 that is engaged by the end of the work forcing the core back against a spring 26 and causing rotation of the parts 13, 14 and 19 to open gradually the diehead to generate the taper. Contact of the bar 9 with pins 23 carried by the ring 14 moves the ring axially, disengaging the key 17 from the notch 18 to permit the spring 20 rapidly to open the die-head. Resetting is effected by a handle attached to the ring 19 and the set position of the dies is adjusted by moving the key 17 laterally in its groove in the ring 14.
