In a quick adjustment vice having a stationary jaw 3 keyed by means of a handle 5 to an outside shell member 2 and a movable jaw 6 having a relatively long cylindrical part 7 which telescopes in a cylindrical part 4 of the stationary jaw 3, a rotatable spindle 8 is mounted in the movable jaw 6 and a cylindrical nut 14 is provided having a continuous internal thread for engagement with a continuous thread 8<SP>1</SP> on the spindle and partial external threads 14<SP>1</SP> for engagement with a partial internal thread 19<SP>1</SP> on the shell 2. The nut 14 is provided with stops 21 corresponding in number to the groups of teeth of the partial thread. The jaws 3, 6 are formed as hollow members, the jaw 3 being angularly adjustable by the handle 5. Spring means such as a spring 18 is provided between a plug 15 fixedly mounted on the spindle 8 and the nut 14 to prevent movement therebetween as the spindle is rotated to bring the teeth 14<SP>1</SP>, 19<SP>1</SP> out of engagement. In a modification, Fig. 7, the nut 14 is formed with a concentric groove 17a in which a correspondingly curved bar 18b is inserted and urged to move in one direction by a spring 18c, the opposite end of the rod extending outwardly in the form of a projection which is positioned relatively to one of the groups of partial threads. In another modification, Figs. 9, 10 (not shown), the main body of the vice is rotatably fixed to a base member.
