Abstract

118,863. Smith, A. W. July 7, 1917. Turning.-A screw-cutting or turning tool, primarily for lathes on repetition work, is constructed to back out the tool automatically at a predetermined point and provided with regulating-means, with an antifriction bearing, and with means to release the pressure on the tool. The tool is mounted by a bolt 39 and cotter 40 in a head 17 on a bar 14 slidable in a holder 10 and provided with a cross-head 19 actuated by a handle 20 against the resistance of a spring 16. The bar is held up to the work normally by the end 25 of a spring-controlled pivoted plate 24 mounted on a pin 23 and carrying an adjustable rod 29. The end 25 is arranged between the bar 14 and an adjustable screw 32 provided with a nut 36, a lock nut 36<a>, and a graduated head 33 which engages a spring-controlled lever 34. The head 17 runs on an antifriction roller 38, which is arranged to take the pressure of the work. According to the Provisional Specification, the adjustment is effected by a rotatable head having a number of circumferentially-disposed adjustable stops.
