Abstract

212,976. Wade, F. R., and C. A. V. Small Tools, Ltd. Dec. 18, 1922. Lathes; lathe centres and drivers. - A turning - lathe comprises a slotted tubular bed d supporting the saddle wand tailstock x and carried in pedestals b, f the former being integral with a headstock a carrying a spindle l driven by a stepped pulley 9. The spindle bearings 2 are adjustable by means of screws, and a thrust washer 5 is provided at the forward end which carries also a driver 11 having a centre 12 and driving pin 13. The pedestals are fixed to a bench n by means of bolts l coacting with segmental nuts h which are located within the bed and have projections passing through the slot in the bed and into a recess in the pedestals. The tailstock x is guided on the bed by a segmental nut 49 having a projection engaging the slot e and held in place by a bolt 51, the part x being split and clamped by a screw. The back centre 41 is of square section and is carried in a bearing 42 and adjusted by a hand-operated screw 43 which is locked against axial movement in its bearing 46 by means of keys. The feed screw p, operated by a hand wheel q, is mounted in a slotted bearing u secured in the pedestal f, and is held against axial movement by keys t shaped as shown in Fig. 3. The saddle is provided with a cross slide 14 and tool post 15 and may be clamped to the bed by screws 19, the feed nut v having a projection which engages the slot e to prevent rotary movement. The cross slide is provided with an integral split guide 23 engaging ways on the saddle and bored to receive the crossfeed screw 24 which engages a nut 26. The halves of the split guide 23 are expanded to take up wear by means of a taper-headed bolt 27, and wearing strips 34 may be provided. The crossfeed screw is prevented from axial movement by keys similar to those provided for the fed screw p.
