Abstract

169,473. Ross, J., and Ross, A. April 10, 1920. Mine and colliery signals. -- In signalling apparatus for use in mines, a spindle carries a ratchet - wheel D keyed to the spindle and a second ratchetwheel loosely mounted thereon. A pointer J moving over a dial is fixed to the spindle C, and a disc H, is attached to the looselymounted wheel. The disc H bears two sets of numerals, one set comprising repeated indications " 3 " or " men " and the other set " level " indications, and one indication of each set is exhibited in the apertures A1, A2. The signal rope b, Fig. 7, is attached to levers T, e, and the wheel D is turned by means of a pawl R, Fig. 2, on a pawl rod R operated through levers Q, S by the lever T. The second wheel is turned by the wheel D by means of driving-pins. The wheel D is prevented from returning to zero by the prong Y, of a catch Y which is pivoted to the frame and the lower end of which is weighted, whilst the second wheel is retained by a pawl a1, on a rod a, which is also weighted to keep the pawl a1 in mesh with the wheel. At the commencement of operations a lever k, pivoted at k1, keeps the pawls a1, R, out of mesh with the ratchet wheels. On the signal rope b being pulled, the hammer f, Fig. 7, is raised, the lever k falls, and the pawlrod R, Fig. 2, is lifted. To this rod is attached a plate q, which raises the flange V of the oil-pump U acting as a dash-pot. When the signal-rope is released, the hammer f strikes the bell g, and the pawl-rod R descends, the pawl R, moving the wheel D through one step. The second wheel is carried round bv the wheel D. Between the strokes of a signal, the wheel D is prevented from returning to zero bv the prong Y, of the catch Y, but when a pause occurs the flange V of the oilpump carries down the prong Y2 of the catch Y and releases the prong Y1 from the wheel D, allowing it to return to zero. The second wheel is held by the pawl a,. The lever T rests on an arrangement of levers on which the lever k also rests, and on the first stroke of a signal these levers are pulled into a position in which a pin on the cross-head of the engine can strike one of them when the engine is moved to comply with the order, so that they are moved back to the original position, raising again the lever k to knock the pawls R1, a, from engagement withboth ratchet-wheels and allowing the whole apparatus to return to zero position.
