Abstract

In a device which produces mechanical locking of a telephone dial after a predetermined number of impulse trains has been dialled, a ratchet wheel 2 (Fig. 1) is coupled to the finger plate 15 (Fig. 5, not shown) of the dial and is provided with a movable pin 13 (Fig. 2) which may be arranged at one of a number of points on the periphery of the wheel 2 depending upon the number of impulse trains allowed to be made. The pin 13 brings about, after the predetermined number of impulse trains has been dialled, the locking of the ratchet wheel 2 with consequent locking of the finger plate. The wheel 2 is slidably and rotatably mounted on a shaft 1 indirectly coupled to the finger plate such that dialling of any one impulse train causes the shaft 1 to rotate by an amount such that a pawl 6 advances the wheel 2 by one tooth. The pawl 6 is held in engagement with the teeth by a leaf spring 7 mounted on a casing 5. The wheel 2 is located by a collar 3 (Fig. 4, not shown), which extends from the wheel 2 and projects through a hole in the casing 5. The collar 3 is omitted from Fig. 1 to show a spring 4 wound around the shaft 1. The spring 4 is attached to the wheel 2 and casing 5 and acts to return the wheel 2 to its initial position when a resetting mechanism is operated. A pin 14 determines the initial position of the wheel 2. An abutment 8 is engaged by the pin 13 when the maximum number of impulse trains has been dialled and is engaged by the pin 14 in the restored position. A retaining pawl 9 latches on to the teeth of the wheel 2 to retain it in the position to which it has been rotated by the pawl 6. The resetting mechanism includes two arms 12, 12<SP>1</SP> (Fig. 4, not shown) which grip the collar 3 for longitudinal movement but allow the collar 3 freedom for rotational movement. When the handset is replaced the wheel 2 is raised and taken out of engagement with pawls 9 and 6.
