Abstract

238,920. Haran, J., and Raynor, J. A. April 22, 1924. Mechanical telegraphs; mine and colliery signals.-A mine signal of the type comprising a pointer operated through a ratchet by pulling the bell wire is so constructed that the working and holding pawls are released together by the movement of the cage indicator, and also, bv the action of a bell crank lever associated with the dashpot, on the first stroke of a fresh signal. The bell wire is attached to the lever i, which is pivoted at i<1> and carries the working pawl f. At the first stroke of a signal the piston rod u of the dashpot p is lifted through the action of the bell crank lever n and slotted link o<1>. A cam t on the rod u tilts the bell crank lever r and trips the holding pawl g, the ratchet e and pointer being thereupon returned to zero. The remaining strokes of a signal do not, however, effect the release of the pawl g, owing to the fact that the rod u is held up by the dashpot for a suitable time. When three strokes are signalled a block x on the ratchet e lifts the rod y and raises the " MEN " indicator z through linkwork, this indicator being then retained by the catch lever z<1>. Automatic cancelling device. The operation of the winding engine when decking and when changing cages causes the rod v to be lifted by a cord. The lever r<1> is therebv tilted and carries with it the lever r, tripping the pawls f, g and releasing the ratchet e and pointer. At the same time the pin v' trips the lever z<1> and releases the " MEN " signal. For this purpose the rod v is connected by a cord v<1>, Fig. 3, to a bell crank lever v<2> which is conneoted by a cord v<11> to a trip device v<3> and by a cord v<4> to a weighted bar w<1> which is suspended from a pulley v<6> on the shaft v<7> of the depth indicator v<8>, this shaft being driven by the winding engine. On decking, the weighted bar w<1> is lowered and so tightens the wire v<1> to effect cancellation. On changing cages the weight is further lowered so as to tighten the wire v<4>. the weight ultimately being borne by a pin w<2> which rests on the floor. When the two cages pass in the middle of the wind the wire v<5> again winds on to the pulley v<6> and the above operations can be repeated at the beginning of the next wind.
