In a safety device for limiting the load 11 to be lifted by a crane 3 having a lifting cable 6 and a winch 7, the cable is led in a path which causes it to exert a lifting action on a counterweight 13 normally resting on a support 4 so that if the load exceeds a predetermined value the counterweight, and not the load, is lifted by the winding in of the cable on to the drum, such lifting of the counterweight being used to stop the drum. As shown, when load 11 is made too heavy the resultant tension in cable 6 raises weight 13 (load 11 remaining on the ground) so that said weight slides along rails 15 till it strikes a lever (not shown) to declutch the winch drum or a switch to cut-out the motor which drives the said drum. Alternatively, the weight may be secured to the actual end of the cable, the latter at some intermediary point being looped around a pulley block carrying the load 11.
