458,942. Indicating overload of cranes and ropes. CANALE, G. B., Villino Ceresa, Sori, Genoa, Italy. Aug. 26, 1935, No. 23837. [Classes 78 (ii), 78 (iv), and 78 (v)] [See also Group XIX] In a device for signalling and indicating the loading of cables, in which the rope is passed over fixed pulleys and under a movable pulley to form a loop which is diminished by the stress in the cable, pneumatic braking and cushioning means is fitted to absorb sudden violent shocks in the cables. In the form shown the movable pulley C moves a piston G against the action of springs E and also against the resistance of the dash-pot cylinder H controlled by the regulatable needle valve J. The piston rod carries an arm O moving over a scale Q to indicate its position, and also carries a contact which completes a circuit at R on overload and actuates an audible or visible signal. In modifications one contact is carried at the point F and the other on the cylinder, also two or more sets of contacts may be actuated in series at different stages of increasing load. In other cases, the cylinder may be movable and the piston fixed, or the cylinder may oscillate and the pulley C be connected thereto by a crank arm.
