Abstract

1,257,307. Rope descent apparatus. BARROW HEPBURN & GALE Ltd. 25 April, 1969 [16 April, 1968], No. 17897/68. Heading A3V. [Also in Divisions A6, E2 and F2] A device capable of being fitted to a suspended rope R and exercising frictional restraint on the descent of a person having a safety belt (not shown) attached to the device at 2', comprises a runner through which the rope can travel, the runner having a core 1 around which the portion of the rope within the runner cap wrap one or more times, and surfaces 5', 8' between which the rope can pass and which are relatively movable by hand to give a variable grip on the rope during descent. The rope passes through a cut away portion of an end plate 3' clamped to core 1 by an eye bolt 2' which is screwed thereto; the rope passes over roller 5' at one end of a pin 4' extending through core 1, and passes under a stud 8' secured to a plate 7 slidably mounted over the end of pin 4'. The upper end of the device in Fig. 1 is similar to the lower end, and also shows pins 12 which are fitted through the eyenuts 2, 2' and end plates 3, 3' and which cooperate with pins 4, 4' to prevent the end plates rotating. A tubular cover 9 is screwed to plate 7 at 11, so that downward movement of the cover grips the rope between members 5' and 8' and slows descent. As the device is symmetrical it may be used either way up. Alternatively the gripping surfaces may be formed directly by the core and cover.
