[Classes 78 (ii), 78 (iii) and 78 (iv)] An unbalanced arm 1 (Fig. 2), which may be the jib of a crane is secured to a shaft 2 and is balanced by a spring 3 connected at one end by a cable 10 to a sector 11 on the arm 1 and at the other end to a pin 4 on a crank 5 secured to a shaft 6 carrying a sprocket 7 connected by a chain 8 to a sprocket 9 on the shaft 2. Thus the chain exerts balancing forces directly on the sector 11 and indirectly through the chain 8 on the shaft 2. As shown, the crank 5 is horizontal when the arm 1 is vertical. The sprockets 7, 9 may be of different sizes and the sector 11 may be specially shaped. The spring 3 may comprise a series of compounded springs which become effective at various points during the displacement of the arm 1 and the tension spring 3 may be replaced by a compression spring or springs acting through a suitable harness upon pull rods. Fig. 6 shows the application of the invention to means for supporting a kinematograph screen 13 as in Specification 650,461. The arm 1 supported on a shaft 2 carries a sector (not shown) behind the rack-wheel 17 to which sector is secured a cable 10 connected to a spring 3 secured at 4 to a crank 5 on a shaft 6 connected by a chain 8 passing round a guide sprocket 30 and round sprockets 7, 9 on the shaft 2.
