Abstract

1312120 Vibratory core-sampler INSTITUT GEOLOGH I RAZRABOTKI GORJUCHIKH ISKOPAEMYKH 4 Aug 1970 37654/70 Heading E1F A vibratory device for taking ocean-floor sediment cores comprises a pipe string, a vibrator engaged with a pipe coupling to vibrate the string into the floor and a hoist to automatically lift the vibrator from oceanfloor level into engagement with the next coupling. As shown, Fig. 1, a frame 4 including platform 3 is suspended from float 6 about pipe string 7 and vibrator 11 is secured by three grippers 12 to lower coupling 10. As the vibrator descends with the string, Fig. 2, rod 29 engages platform 3 and withdraws pin 25 from a coupling groove. Rod 23 then engages platform 3 and pivots comb 22 to release sleeve 21, while rod 29 switches off the vibrator and switches on hoist 13. The hoist lifts the vibrator on cable 14 attached to frame 4, thereby releasing grippers 12 from the coupling. Lever 31 is pivoted, when its free end is lifted above the coupling, by spring 33 and pulls lever 30 to maintain pin 25 withdrawn. Lever 31 is oppositely pivoted by the next coupling to release the pin, then located above the coupling, and to switch off the hoist. The vibrator falls until pin 25 enters the coupling groove. Lever 18 also falls to lower sleeve 21, so that grippers 12 engage the coupling, and to restart the vibrator. The hoist may be mounted on frame 4. A piston located within the pipe string is lifted with the string to retain a sediment core within the string.
