Mechanical telegraphs; mine and colliery signals.-Comprises a mine signal in which a drum 2 is rotated by ratchet and pawl so as to exhibit orders through a window 6, the ratchet mechanism being operated by a reciprocating frarne 24 in combination with a dash-pot 36, while a plate 15 is adapted to exhibit the word " men " through a window 17; and consists in gearing the indicator shaft 3 to the ratchet wheel spindle 9 by pinions. The wire 31 when pulled raises a frame 24 carrying two depending rods 26, 27, the rods 26 being adapted during its downward motion to turn the drum 2 one step by engagement of its pawl 33 with the ratchet wheel 12 which is geared to the drum by pinions. The shaft of the ratchet wheel carries an arm 21 which, when three strokes are signalled, engages an arm 20 and so raises an arm 18, lifting a plate 15 so as to exhibit a " men on " notice in the window 17. This signal is retained in the exhibited position by a pin 22a on a weighted pawl 22 engaging the arm 20; it is released by the wire 23 operated by the winding engine.
