[Cognate Application, 3804/15.] Mechanical telegraphs.-A mine signalling-apparatus consists of a plate 1 having a single aperture which is moved in front of a board bearing numerals, the plate 1 being provided behind with a clutch face 3 which is engaged by a detent 6 connected by a rod 7, cam-track 8, and roller 9 to a time-absorbing cylinder 11. The signal is given by one of a number of levers 14 connected to various parts of the mine, which levers engage under the pin of a crank 12, causing a link 13 to raise a lever 4 and lift up the plate 1 one tooth for each pull. Tue cam-track is so formed that actuation of the lever 4 while the cylinder 11 is up is accompanied by progressive movement of the plate 1, while when the cylinder 11 is down, the plate 1 is first zeroized and then is progressively raised. A plate 21 suspended pendulum-wise bears the " men " indication "3," and is adapted to be released and exposed by the raising of a latch 23 by a projection 24 on the plate 1, and to be returned sideways out of sight by a cam 21<a> on the plate 1 when this is further raised. A lever 18 having an arm 19 engageable with a collar on the rod 7 retracts the detent 6 and zeroizes the plate 1 after the winding begins, and also rocks the plate 23 out of sight. Disks 15, connected by slotted arms 16 to the levers 14 and presenting characters registering with an aperture, indicate which lever 14 has been actuated.
